President Barack Obama is summoning congressional lawmakers to the White House, starting later Wednesday with House of Representatives Democrats.
While there was no discernible movement in the deadlock over how to fund the government or deal with the debt limit, there was more talking.
House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio met with House Democratic leaders, led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. No one commented on the substance of the meeting.
"Reps. Pelosi and (Minority Whip Steny) Hoyer asked for the meeting, and as we've stated publicly, we're willing to meet with any Democratic leader who is willing to talk," said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel.
After the meeting, Boehner gave a one-minute speech on the House floor and showed little mercy for the Democratic position. He labeled the new health care law a "train wreck."
House Republicans are expected to meet with Obama later this week. Separate meetings with Senators are also anticipated.
