The Senate adjourned for the day Monday with no deal announced to end the partial federal government shutdown and increase the nation's debt ceiling.
However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., both smiled as they indicated that they are close to finalizing a deal.
"We've made tremendous progress," Reid said. "We are not there yet but we've made tremendous progress. And everyone just needs to be patient."
McConnell added that "We've had a good day."
"I think it's safe to say we've made substantial progress and we look forward to making more progress in the near future."
