The government shutdown crisis is over, so Republicans are trying hard to turn political attention to Obamacare.
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli delivered the party's Saturday address, and hit the administration hard. Cuccinelli needs to turn attention to the Affordable Care Act, plagued recently by glitches, as polls show a majority of Virginians blame the Republicans for the government shutdown.
Cuccinelli trails Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the latest NBC/Marist poll, as McAuliffe has widened his lead.
Cuccinelli is fighting back, stressing the flaws in Obamacare.
"During the debate over this law, citizens in the commonwealth were told they could easily access information about their health care choices and join the system," he said. "Well, that prove to be untrue."
He also questioned the program's legality.
"I believe that ObamaCare is unconstitutional," Cuccinelli said. "I believe it’s an affront to the freedoms and liberties our founding fathers fought to establish on our behalf. I’m proud to say many of those heroes were Virginians, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry."
The address drew a quick response from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
"Virginians want leaders who will expand access to health care, not take it away," said Cecile Richards, the group's president.
She added that "What you won't hear from Ken Cuccinelli or his friends in Washington is that thanks to the Affordable Care Act, women have the tools they need to stay health--access to preventive care like mammograms, birth control and checkups without the co-pays that can add up to big bucks.
"Under the ACA," she said, "women will no longer have to pay more for health insurance than men, and can no longer be denied insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions like breast cancer, having a C-section or being the victim of domestic violence."
