Christie appealing to independents, big chunk of Democrats, poll finds

McClatchy Washington Bureau

November 04, 2013 09:26 AM

No surprise in the latest Quinnipiac University poll: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie looks headed for a big win Tuesday.

More important is what the poll suggests about the Republican's appeal as he glides to a second term.

The poll shows he could get the votes of 30 percent of Democrats, a high figure for a Republican.

He also is poised to win the women's' vote, 57 to 36 percent, a big margin for a GOP candidate. And independents favor him over Democrat Barbara Buono, 64-29 percent.

Those are the kinds of numbers that will make the political world interested in a Christie White House candidacy, said Maurice Carroll, poll director.

"With his appeal to independent voters, and even Democrats, Christie-for-President 2016 begins a few minutes after 8 o'clock tomorrow night," Carroll said.
