President Barack Obama called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sunday to try to assure him that the deal announced a day earlier by Iran and world powers would not be harmful.
Hours earlier, Netanyahu criticized the accord that would for the first time roll back portions of Iran’s nuclear program. In return, some economic sanctions against Iran would be eased. He called the agreement a "historic mistake."
"Consistent with our commitment to consult closely with our Israeli friends, the president told the prime minister that he wants the United States and Israel to begin consultations immediately regarding our efforts to negotiate a comprehensive solution," according to the White House. "The president underscored that the United States will remain firm in our commitment to Israel, which has good reason to be skeptical about Iran's intentions."
