More than 375K people visited revamped health care website Monday

Anita Kumar - McClatchy Washington Bureau

It was even Cyber Monday for Healthcare.gov.

More than 375,000 people visited the website before noon Monday, according to the White House. Some of them were put in a queue to wait until the volume decreased.

It's unclear how many of Monday's visitors enrolled or were put into the queue, where customers will be invited back at a later time.

"We absolutely anticipated that on this day in particular, because it is the first workday after the deadline we set for ourselves to make sure that the website was functioning effectively for the vast majority of users, we would see a surge in visitors to the website," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters at his daily briefing.

After a disasterous rollout of Healthcare.gov, White House officials said they expect the site to be able to handle 50,000 simultaneous users and 800,000 daily visitors.

"The president believes that the site has been significantly improved and that the teams in place have worked 24/7 for weeks now to make those improvements, including significant improvements that were made over the weekend," Carney said. "But the work is not done... And each day, we will continue to take steps to make further improvements so that that experience is enhanced for users every day."
