Boehner fires back at Democrats' "do-nothing Congress" charge

David Lightman - McClatchy Washington Bureau

December 04, 2013 01:24 PM

House of Representatives Republicans and Democrats have been spending these last days of the 2013 congressional session charging each other with being irresponsible.

Democrats say Republicans, in charge of the House, are doing too little. Republicans say that's not so.

Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner went to the House floor to make his case. He listed bills that he said would "help our economy and boost job creation," bills that are going nowhere in the Democratic-run Senate.

The bills, he said, would "increase the supply of American energy & build the Keystone pipeline, roll back red tape & unnecessary regulation...reform & improve job training programs, protect Americans from cyber attacks, help schools to recruit & keep the best teachers, delay the individual mandate, allow the American people to keep the health care plans that they like or to scrap the health care law that's wreaking havoc on our economy."

Boehner charged that “Every single one of these bills has been blocked by Washington Democrats.  The Senate and the president continue to stand in the way of the people’s priorities.

“Now we're trying to come to an agreement on the budget and on the farm bill, amongst other issues that are in conference.  Chairman Ryan and Chairman Lucas have made serious, good-faith efforts to Senate Democrats.

“When will they learn to say ‘yes’ to common ground?  When will they start listening to the American people?”
