The National Endowment for the Arts announced a series of grants Wednesday worth $25.8 million that will help arts projects and programs in nearly all the states.
"The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support these exciting and diverse arts projects that will take place throughout the United States," said NEA Senior Deputy Chairman Joan Shigekawa. "Whether it is through a focus on education, engagement, or innovation, these projects all contribute to vibrant communities and memorable experiences for the public to engage with the arts." All states except South Dakota received at least one award - a creative writing winner living there moved to California, leaving South Dakota without a winner.
Among the grantees:
- Amon Carter Museum of Western Art in Fort Worth, $70,000
To support the exhibition "Navigating the West: George Caleb Bingham and the River."
- The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo., $90,000
To support the traveling exhibition "Calling the Buffalo: Art of the Plains Indians of North America."
- Opera Carolina Charlotte, N.C., $12,500
To support a new production of Rise For Freedom, a one-act opera by composer Adolphus Hailstork and librettist David Gonzalez based on a true story about a bi-racial young man who bought his way out of slavery, had a foundry and was a leader in the Underground Railroad.
