The House of Representatives voted 227-188 for the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," aimed at tightening restrictions on federal funding of abortions.
The measure has 165 House co-sponsors but is expected to go nowhere in the Senate.
The bill, according to sponsor Chris Smith, R-N.J., would end public funding for abortion coverage included in the Affordable Care act as of next year.
Smith explained that “In the run up to passage of Obamacare, Americans were repeatedly told by President Obama himself, including in a speech to a joint session of Congress in September 2009 that ‘under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions.'''
Federal funding is now barred for most abortions.
After the vote, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor thanked Smith for legislation "that respects the morals and views of millions of Americans and ultimately saves lives."
