Biden fires up Democrats, assures them people agree with party on issues

McClatchy Washington Bureau

February 14, 2014 09:16 AM

Vice President Joe Biden gave House Democrats a pep talk Friday, assuring them that the American people agree with the party on virtually every major issue.

"On every major issue, people agree with the Democratic party," he told about 125 House of Representatives members gathered for the last day of a three-day retreat at a Cambridge, Md., resort.

Democrats control 200 of the House's 435 seats, with 218 a majority. Few analysts give the party a good chance to regain the majority it lost in the 2010 election.

Biden chided Republicans, saying "There isn't a Republican party," and that there were "three or four responses" to President Barack Obama's Jan. 28 State of the Union address.

The audience was particularly pleased when Biden offered a strong defense of immigrants, noting that they are particularly strong people who gave up their homelands in hope of a better life in the United States.

"It takes a special breed of person," Biden said.
