Michelle Obama: Mom jeans, no; mom dance, yes

Lesley Clark - McClatchy Washington Bureau

February 28, 2014 11:31 AM

First Lady Michelle Obama touted four years of her Let's Move initiative -- and dished on parenting two girls at the White House with a former occupant of the White House, Jenna Bush Hager, who traveled with Obama to Miami for a segment on NBC's TODAY show.

On whether her daughters ever get embarrased by some of her antics, including "mom dancing" with Jimmy Fallon: “Sometimes, if you get up and dance and you're silly, maybe your kids get up and dance and they're silly and they let the guard down,” Obama said. “You do that for 30 minutes and before you know it, you've exercised and nobody's the wiser.”

On the focus on her "bangs and biceps" rather than her policies: “I'm not the first one to go through it," she told Bush Hager. "Your mom, you know, it was the same thing for her. I still know what dresses she wore for state dinners."

Obama said her philosophy is "if you're looking at me for whatever reason, let me make sure I'm standing in front of something really important so while you're seeing my shoes, you may also see these kids jumping around in this preschool. So as long as the outcome is substantive, I'm okay with the means to the end."
