A congressional delegation plans a 10 day trip to Asia and the Pacific region, starting Friday, for talks with key leaders in Japan, South Korea, and China.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., announced the trip, noting “While the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate and Russia's aggression against Ukraine has raised new concerns about security in Europe, the United States must also remain engaged in promoting peace and stability in Asia”
Among those on the trip will be House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who said he plans to engage on trade and security.
“Strong and healthy relationships are vital to opening new markets for American-made products. And given the security challenges we face in Asia, I especially look forward to meeting with the troops on the front lines in Japan and South Korea,” Ryan said.”
Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who will make the trip, cited “economic and strategic partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region are critical to advancing our shared interests in stability and prosperity.
“In Hawai‘i, we deeply appreciate and understand the importance of these regional alliances,” she said.
The delegation will include Republicans Pat Meehan of Pennsylvania, Mac Thornberry of Texas, Kay Granger of Texas, Kristi Noem of South Dakota, Aaron Schock of Illinois and Paul Cook of California.
