White House announces more steps on improving college opportunity

By Renee Schoof - McClatchy Washington Bureau

Fourteen community colleges _ in North Carolina, Washington, Texas, California and other states _ are joining a White House initiative to help students who aren’t prepared for college get over the hurdles of remedial classes and go on to complete college degrees.

President Barack Obama last January held a meeting to ask college presidents to increase opportunities for college success. White House spokesman Eric Schultz on Wednesday said the additional 14 colleges will join more than 100 others that are working on advancing college opportunity.

The White House also announced a second College Opportunity Summit will be held on Dec. 4. It will focus on encouraging more first-generation and low-income students to go to college and earn degrees.

The 14 community colleges said they would make efforts such as making better assessment tests and providing better supports for students.

The schools are the Borough of Manhattan Community College; Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, Mass.; College of the Ouachitas in Malvern, Ark.; Davidson County Community College in Thomasville, N.C.; Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville, Ohio; Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Wash.; Gaston College in Dallas, N.C.; Lee College in Baytown, Texas; Los Rios Community College District in Sacramento, Calif.; Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash.; Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich.; Passaic County Community College in Paterson, N.J.; Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore.; and West Hills College Lemoore in California.
