DiFi out, Michelle Obama in with Senate run in 2018? Feinstein doubts it

By William Douglas - McClatchy Washington Bureau

October 26, 2014 02:59 PM

Will First Lady Michelle Obama follow former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s footsteps and run for the Senate in 2018?

CNN ‘State of the Union’ anchor Candy Crowley posed the question to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Sunday following a gossip piece last week that said Obama - who’s been busy lately stumping for Democratic congressional and gubernatorial candidates ahead of the November 4 elections - is being urged to run for Feinstein’s seat in if she retires.

‘I’m flattered, if that should be true,’ Feinstein, 81, told Crowley. ‘Somehow I do not believe it is true, but I would be flattered if it were.’

A Michelle 2018 Senate bid would require the Obamas, who call Chicago home, to plant roots in California. The Clintons purchased a house in Chappaqua, N.Y., ahead of Hillary Clinton’s successful 2000 Senate run.

As for Feinstein’s 2018 plans: ‘Well, I have no idea what I’m going to be doing in 2018,’ she said. ‘That’s four years from now, and that’s one of the nice things of a six-year term. I’ve served two years of my term and, you know, I’ll make a decision in due time.’
