Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., hailed his win in Tuesday’s midterm elections as victory for political diversity in the South.
Scott, the first African-American elected to the Senate from the South since Reconstruction, told MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ Wednesday that ‘South Carolina voters vote their values and not my complexion.’
‘This is a great sign for what’s happening throughout the South,’ Scott said. ‘But certainly, a fantastic sign for the evolution that has occurred in South Carolina.’
When asked by MSNBC correspondent Thomas Roberts about the ‘F’ grade on the NAACP’s political scorecard for his voting record, Scott said ‘if I have an ‘F’ on the NAACP scorecard, it’s because I believe that progress has to be made, and the government’s not the answer for progress.’
‘Well, let’s ask ourselves if we look back over history when the Congress was controlled by Democrats for 40 consecutive years,’ Scott said. ‘If you look at the result of that control what has happened to black America? We saw greater poverty. If we take the statistics from 1970s to the 21st Century...These are classic examples that the policies of the left have not worked.’
