Obama to focus on cyber issues next week

By Anita Kumar - McClatchy Washington Bureau

January 10, 2015 12:01 PM

President Barack Obama will continue traveling next week with a three-day focus on consumer protection issues that highlight policies ahead of his annual State of the Union address later this month.

Obama is expected to release a series of legislative proposals and executive actions that tackle identity theft and privacy issues, cybersecurity and access to the Internet, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly as matter of practice.

Here’s how his week is shaping up so far:

On Monday, he will host an event at the Federal Trade Commission offices in Washington to lay out additional steps to combat identity theft and improve consumer and student privacy.

On Tuesday, he will travel to the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center to discuss cybersecurity, including his efforts to increase information sharing between private companies and the federal government in a way that protects civil liberties.

On Wednesday, he will travel to Iowa to unveil new ways to increase access to affordable, high-speed broadband across the country.

On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden will travel on Obama’s behalf to Norfolk to announce new money to train workers to join the cybersecurity workforce.

Last week, he embarked on a three-day, three-state swing to highlight economic policies. He will deliver the State of the Union Jan. 20 in front of a new Congress controlled by Republicans.

Obama will host congressional leaders of both parties and both chambers at the White House Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics, including economic issues and national security.
