Clinton’s campaign huddles with Senate Democrats

By William Douglas and Anita Kumar - McClatchy Washington Bureau

April 21, 2015 05:05 PM

Key representatives of Hillary Clinton’s nascent campaign spent some time on Capitol Hill Tuesday talking to Senate Democrats.

Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and political director Amanda Renteria gave a brief presentation at the weekly Senate Democratic lunch.

“John and Amanda came to our caucus to introduce us in a very broad, quick fashion to Secretary Clinton's campaign for president of the United States,” Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. “They were very, very informative to us. I appreciate their coming there. And we look forward to a number of other opportunities to be able to show the profile we have for the next president of the United States.”

Asked if Podesta laid out any direction of her campaign policy-wise, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. said “It’s really premature. I don’t know, I wish I did, but I don’t.”

“Republicans are making her the target of everything,” Feinstein said. “She is the definitive leader. Rather than running for a primary, they’re already running against her, they’re already knocking her.”

Feinstein said Clinton is “in the lead, got the name recognition, got the background, she’s got the expertise, she’s got the staying power, the stamina, the motivation, we all know that.”

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said she came away from the meeting feeling that Clinton’s campaign is “laser-focused on the right approach and Hillary is going to work hard for every vote, and I’m sure she’ll do great.”

Clinton spent Tuesday in New Hampshire.
