Respondents in Congress to McClatchy’s request for tax returns

McClatchy Newspapers

July 18, 2012 12:00 AM

The following lawmakers responded to McClatchy’s request, either by releasing their tax returns or declining to do so.

LAWMAKERS WHO SHARED THEIR TAX RETURNS:

Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.*

Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif.

Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Calif.

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif.

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I. **

Rep. Howard Coble, R- N.C.

Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif.

Rep. Brad Miller, D-N.C.

Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-Conn.

Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif.

Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis.

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind. ***

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.

TOTAL RESPONSES: 17

Democrats: 13

Republicans: 4

* Berkley’s staff wouldn’t provide her tax returns, but provided them for a local newspaper story on her 2011 tax returns, filed in 2012. The article contained the relevant information, so she was considered as having responded.

** Cicilline didn’t provide tax returns but allowed a McClatchy surrogate to review them in his district office in Providence.

*** Lugar releases a detailed financial statement annually, which was sent recently to McClatchy, that includes most of his relevant tax data, so he was treated as having responded.

RESPONSES IN THE NEGATIVE, MOST CITING DISCLOSURE RULES:

Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.

Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla.

Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-Mo.

Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C

Rep. Renee Ellmers, R-N.C.

Rep. Frank Guinta, R-N.H.

Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C.

Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill.

Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Ill.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C.

Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii

Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill.*

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. **

Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va.

TOTAL NEGATIVE RESPONSES: 19

Democrats: 11

Republicans: 8

* Durbin’s office said he’d release them in mid-June, then said the same for mid-July, then didn’t after repeated follow-ups. He told McClatchy he would attach his tax returns to his annual financial disclosure, which he has done in past years.

** Feinstein’s office contacted McClatchy and said it would share the tax returns, then didn’t, even after repeated follow-ups.
