Sen. Tim Scott was chafing Tuesday from something uncomfortable, unnatural and constricting.
It was a University of Alabama Crimson Tide tie he was forced to wear to pay off a bet with Sen. Jeff Sessions on the college football championship game between Alabama and South Carolina’s Clemson University.
Alabama defeated Clemson 45-40 last month to win the college title.
“I was forced to put on this tie to honor the agreement I had with Sessions, even though he’s actually a War Eagle (Auburn University’s battle cry) and not an Alabama Roll Tide fan,” Scott, R-S.C., said when asked why he was wearing a crimson tie speckled with Alabama’s “A” logo. “I’m going to take it off in about an hour. I’ve had it on for about two hours now and it’s starting to constrict my airways, so it’s got to come off now.”
A gleeful Sessions, R-Ala., a University of Alabama law school graduate, had no sympathy.
“He has a nice tie on,” Sessions said. “I told him they (Clemson) had a nice little team and they played a good game and it was really impressive to watch the former Alabama player and coach, Dabo Swinney, do well. Trained at Alabama, you know. He did a nice job.”
