PAC wants Ole Miss mascot Colonel Reb on 2012 ballot

Scott Hawkins - The Biloxi Sun Herald

September 08, 2011 02:20 PM

Colonel Reb for president?

Not exactly, but if the Colonel Reb Political Action Committee has its way, Colonel Reb may be on the 2012 presidential election ballot.

The PAC announced in a press release Tuesday that Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hoseman has approved and certified initiative number 37 that would allow voters to decide whether Colonel Reb should be restored as the Ole Miss Mascot.

“The Secretary of State’s office is required by law to accept all initiatives that have met all statutory requirements, and they have met all the requirements to have an initiative filed with the Secretary of State’s office,” said Pamela Weaver, a spokeswoman for the Secretary of State’s office. “Therefore, we have filed it, and it is available on the Website.”

The catch?

Organizers must garner 100,000 signatures from registered Mississippi voters, according to the PAC’s press release, evenly divided among the former map of five Mississippi Congressional Districts.

“The agenda of the Colonel Reb Political Action Committee (not affiliated with the Colonel Reb Foundation) is to have a statewide Mississippi vote that includes Colonel Reb as a choice for Ole Miss’ mascot,” the press release states.
