Crew members were out in the rain Tuesday night setting up 8-foot steel barriers along Church Street between Morehead and Stonewall streets.
The security fencing is being put in place for the safety perimeter around the Bank of America Stadium, where President Barack Obama is scheduled to give his acceptance speech Thursday night.
The security plan for the Democratic National Convention called for a vast network of anti-scale steel mesh walls, concrete barriers and bike-rack type fencing around Time Warner Cable Arena, the stadium and other convention venues in uptown Charlotte.
A Secret Service security proposal made public in July plan called for, among other things:
• 5.4 miles of 9-foot security fencing.
• 4,740 feet of concrete barricades.
• 7.7 miles of steel barricades designed to withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound car going 30 mph.
Workers putting up the latest barriers said the security fencing would come down Friday after the convention ends.
