Maryland voters last elected a Republican governor in 2002, and before that, 1966.
But there appears to be a possibility in this heavily Democratic state that Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, the Democrat, could lose Tuesday to Republican Larry Hogan.
Friday, the Cook Political Report, a national, nonpartisan analyst, moved the race from “Leans Democratic” to toss-up.
The race has tightened, and in recent days, top party surrogatges have visited the state. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton campaigned for Brown Thursday, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been helping Hogan.
Brown remains the favorite, but Cook and others note that this one has become close as Hogan hammers away at Democrats’ tax increases in recent years.
