Chris Christie is sinking fast in his home state.
“New Jersey voters have soured on the governor,’’ said a new Rutgers-Eagleton poll released Friday. Christie’s support statewide was at 37 percent of registered voters, down 7 percentage points in two months.
For the first time, a majority – 53 percent – is unfavorable toward Christie, who is considering a 2016 run for president. Fifty-two percent disapprove of the job he’s doing, while 42 percent approval, down 6 points since December.
Among the reasons: One in five cited attitude, personality, and behavior. Fifteen percent mentioned the George Washington Bridge closing contvoersy, and one in 10 noted his shunning gubernatorial duties to pursue the Republican nomination for president.
“As one respondent said, ‘Christie visiting different states for the presidential race made New Jerseyans not like him,’” said David Redlawsk, director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling “Others used words like ‘arrogance,’ ‘rudeness’ and ‘abrasive’ to explain the turnaround from his high flying post-Sandy days. And of course, all manner of mentions of Bridgegate and other scandals were offered.”
