Democrats may have lost the Senate in November, but they won the money war in February.
The Democratic Senate Campaign Committee reported Friday it had its best off-year February ever. It raised $4.34 million, topping its Republican counterpart, which raised a reported $3.8 million.
The Democratic committee ended the month with $5.5 million cash on hand, more than the Republicans’ $4.3 million.
However, Democrats have $15 million in operation debt, far above the $8 million the National Republican Senatorial Committee carries.
Republicans control 54 of the 100 Senate seats. But 24 Republicans face re-election in 2016, while only 10 Democrats are up. The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report, a nonpartisan analysis, rates 14 Republicans and eight Democratic seats as safe.
It sees two pure tossups, seats now held by Sens. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis. Others are rated as tilting, leaning or favoring one party or another.
