Ben Carson is running for president.
The retired neurosurgeon told a Florida television station Sunday “I’m willing to be part of the equation and therefore, I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States of America.”
Carson, 63, will discuss his candidacy at a really in his hometown of Detroit Monday.
He gave a preview Sunday night. “Many people have suggested to me that I should run for president, even though I’m not a politician,” he said.
Carson was asked about controversial statements he’s made in recent years and whether he’s learned anything.
“I don’t wander off into those extraneous areas that can be exploited. I have learned that,” he said.
Carson will join a crowded Republican field as a decided underdog. But his draft committee raised more than $13 million by the end of last year, and he claims supporters in all 99 counties in Iowa, site of the nation’s first caucus.
