Super PAC backing Rand Paul raises much less than rivals

WASHINGTON

The main Super PAC supporting Rand Paul’s bid for the presidency raised just $3.1 million in the first half of the year, far less than rivals for the Republican nomination.

The fundraising report filed Friday with the Federal Election Commission by America’s Liberty PAC, which is affiliated with longtime Paul aide Jesse Benton, was dominated by two major donors.

George Macricostas, Nevada-based CEO of data center company RagingWire, gave $1.1 million and Jeff Yass, owner of the Pennsylvania investment firm Susquehanna Partners, gave $1 million.

The PAC’s fundraising total is dwarfed by Right to Rise, the Super PAC supporting former Gov. Jeb Bush, which reported raising $103 million.

Super PACs backing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker have also raised far more money.

Paul’s presidential campaign reported $7 million in second quarter fundraising. That total was heavy on small donations, which is an indication of grassroots support, but was less than the campaign fundraising totals of Republican rivals Bush, Cruz, Rubio and Ben Carson.
