Jeb Bush is furiously distancing himself from presidential front runner Donald Trump -- but Hillary Clinton is arguing the two are more alike than it appears.
The Democratic presidential contender’s campaign is out with a new English-Spanish video highlighting Bush’s use of the words “anchor baby,” following Trump’s use of what the Clinton campaign calls “hateful rhetoric” -- and the use of “anchor baby” to describe children born on American soil to immigrants here illegally. Trump this week said he doesn’t believe those children are American citizens, although the Fourteenth amendment to the constitution guarantees them citizenship.
The video shows Trump saying that he’ll use the word “anchor baby” and then includes a clip from a Bush radio interview in which he, too, uses the words “anchor babies.”
“Who’s ‘the reasonable one’ again?” the video asks.
Bush said in the interview that he believes birthright citizenship is “protected” by the 14th amendment, but he called for stepped up enforcement to see that the provision is not misused.
“If there’s fraud or if there’s abuse, if pregnant women are coming in to have babies, simply because they can do it, then there ought to be greater enforcement,” Bush told Bill Bennett’s Morning in America Show. “Greater enforcement so you don't have these, you know, anchor babies as they are described coming into the country.”
Bush, whose own immigration plan and support for a path to legalization has drawn criticism from conservatives, described much of Trump’s plan as “impractical.”
“I just don’t think it’s legitimate to say that we’re going to change our Constitution and that’s going to solve our problem, I just don’t think that that’s the proper thing to do,” Bush said.
