Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he does pay some federal taxes.
Asked directly at a press conference if he pays some federal taxes, Trump responded, “I do.” He is currently being audited by the Internal Revenue Service and said that following completion of that process he would release the returns. He said he wasn’t sure if that would come before the general election in November.
The presumptive nominee has previously refused to make his personal financial information public, a practice commonplace for presidential candidates. Trump has said that his returns are “none of your business,” and has made contradictory statements about how much he pays in federal taxes.
He has said he pays “substantial” amounts in taxes, and has also worked “very hard to pay as little tax as possible.” The last known information made public about the billionaire businessman’s taxes showed that for at least two years in the 1970s he paid $0 in income taxes.
