Trump Jr. to campaign in North Carolina, Georgia

By Katie Glueck

October 02, 2018 01:12 PM

WASHINGTON

Donald Trump Jr., the son of President Donald Trump, is headed to Charlotte next week to support Mark Harris, a conservative congressional candidate running in North Carolina’s unexpectedly competitive Ninth District.

Trump Jr. will headline a fundraising luncheon benefiting Harris on Oct. 9 along with Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, also of North Carolina, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, the vice chair of the pro-Trump organization America First.

The event will be held at City Club Charlotte, according to an invitation and other details shared with McClatchy. Tickets start at $1,000 and go up to $10,000 per person.

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. will then head to Athens, Ga., that evening for a fundraiser to boost Brian Kemp, the GOP candidate for governor, who is running in a tight, high-profile race against Democrat Stacey Abrams. Tickets to the Kemp fundraiser start at $50 and go up to $1,000, according to another invitation.

In North Carolina, Harris, a former Baptist pastor, is running against Democrat Dan McCready, a well-funded Marine veteran, in a district that stretches from the Charlotte area east to the Fayetteville region, and includes both moderate, monied suburbs and deeply conservative, more rural pockets. Donald Trump won the district by nearly 12 percentage points in 2016.

But in a tough environment for the GOP, national Republicans consider the race to be close. The president has also headlined a fundraiser for Harris.

The seat is currently held by Rep. Robert Pittenger, who lost to Harris in a GOP primary earlier this year, a race in which both candidates competed to seize the mantle of the most pro-Trump candidate.

The events next week are the latest on a growing list of campaign stops for Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle, who are dating. Last week they appeared at events in Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nevada, and are expected to maintain a heavy schedule of fundraisers and rallies through Election Day next month. They will be in Texas on Wednesday, campaigning for Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican who faces a serious challenge from Democrat Beto O’Rourke.

Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle are also slated to appear at two rallies next week with the conservative student-focused group Turning Point USA: One on Oct. 9 in Athens, Ga., and one on Oct. 10 in Davie, Fla.
