Hours after Democrats put the first woman in history at the top of a major political party’s ticket, Donald Trump was in a news conference, publicly inviting a foreign adversary to conduct cyberespionage into Hillary Clinton’s email.
“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Donald J. Trump said. It was unprecedented, shocking, and put Republicans in a difficult spot, as they desperately grapple to regain the White House, with the bombastic, unpredictable businessman at the top of the party’s ticket.
Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Democrats continued their well-choreographed convention, with a procession of accomplished lawmakers and others taking the stage to build support for Clinton.
The highlight, by far, was President Barack Obama, who took the stage to defend America and champion Clinton.
“Even in the middle of crisis, she listens to people, and keeps her cool, and treats everybody with respect. And no matter how daunting the odds; no matter how much people try to knock her down, she never, ever quits,” Obama said. “That’s the Hillary I know.”
He urged Democrats to come together, to rally behind Clinton, reaching out to party idealists who had aligned themselves with Sen. Bernie Sanders.
If you’re serious about our democracy, you can’t afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue. You’ve got to get in the arena with her, because democracy isn’t a spectator sport. America isn’t about ‘yes he will.’ It’s about ‘yes we can.’ And we’re going to carry Hillary to victory this fall, because that’s what the moment demands.
