Lesley Clark - McClatchy Washington Bureau

February 04, 2014 06:14 PM

The White House says President Obama was "reassured by his team" that its taking "all appropriate steps" to keep U.S. athletes and spectators at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, safe.

The assurances came amid a meeting in the White House's Situation Room to update Obama on the U.S. government’s efforts to support security for the Olympic Games in Sochi.

The White House says the United States has offered its "full support and cooperation" to Russian authorities, who are responsible for the Games.

It says Obama convened the meeting and was briefed on the security environment, U.S cooperation with Russian authorities, and on the "full range of U.S. government support for our athletes, delegation, and Americans attending the Olympics."

The White House says Obama directed his national security team "to continue to work closely with the Russian government and other partners toward a secure and successful Sochi games, and to review carefully and act on any new information that might affect the security of the Games."

He was joined by Vice President Joe Biden, National Security Advisor Susan Rice, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Director of Central Intelligence John Brennan, National Counterterrorism Center Director Olsen, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James Comey, Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dempsey, Secretary of Homeland Security Johnson, Deputy Attorney General Cole and other senior members of the president's team.
