There were plenty of times over the past year when it seemed as if Kansas did not have Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' full attention. That can't continue – and won't, judging from the Democrat's year-ending interviews.
At the time, Sebelius offered good reasons for why she chose to spend so much time and energy during 2008 stumping for Barack Obama, among other partisan pursuits, and his serious consideration of her as a running mate or Cabinet member reflected well on her state as well as her leadership.
But she already has a job, and it won't be an easy one in the rough months to come.
The current budget year is on track to see a $141 million budget shortfall, which will necessitate immediate cuts. If there are no cuts this year, there would be a projected $1 billion difference next fiscal year between expected revenues and spending commitments – including another $150 million for public schools.
So far, the budget ideas Sebelius has offered don't add up.
