South Carolinians are free to reflect on the state's Confederate history without creating another holiday to do it.
That, however, does not satisfy state Sen. Robert Ford, who has introduced a bill that would force counties and towns to observe a Confederate Memorial Day holiday for workers.
Ford, a black Democrat from Charleston who has gubernatorial aspirations, first introduced this bill in 2007. It failed to gain traction then, but he's back with it again.
He would require local governments that receive state money to adopt the state's extensive list of 12 paid holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the May 10 recognition of Confederate Memorial Day.
