Talk about a non-starter: The White House plan to bill the private insurance of veterans for service-connected injuries ran into a political buzz saw. This strident opposition should have been expected by those who dreamed it up.
The proposal was patently unfair, and President Obama has wisely backed away from it.
The Obama administration had been reluctant to release details of its idea, saying specifics would be made public when the full budget is submitted to Congress next month. The administration hoped the plan would bring in about $540 million in additional revenue.
But veterans' service organizations got wind of the proposal through sources on Capitol Hill and in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Eleven groups, including the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans, signed a joint letter rightly labeling the proposal "an abrogation of our government's moral and legal responsibility to the men and women who have sacrificed so much."
