You've had a hard day at work. You're eager to get home and relax, but your troubles have only begun. On arrival, you find a note on the door from your landlord: You have 24 hours to get out.
With foreclosures sweeping the nation, renters are affected as well as home-owning families. But all too often, tenants receive no notice that their landlord's lender is about to foreclose on the property.
Some landlords do notify tenants that a foreclosure looms, but many do not. And in such cases, renters may be forced to find a new place to live on short notice.
Missouri Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, has drafted a bill requiring lenders to provide tenants with at least 20 days notice that the property faces foreclosure. A second provision says new owners can't start eviction proceedings for at least 45 days after a tenant is given notice that a foreclosure sale took place.
