In Kentucky, developing energy has long meant digging coal, so you had to wonder what four colleges and universities meant when they announced plans for "Energizing Kentucky."
True to their missions, though, the schools – the universities of Kentucky and Louisville, and Centre and Berea colleges – were talking about bringing some intellectual energy to Kentucky's approach to energy.
Plenty of work to do there. Some of it will happen here in Lexington next Wednesday and Thursday, April 15 and 16, and everyone's invited.
Last spring, the presidents of the schools announced plans for three conferences where people from different perspectives could discuss energy, taking a long and broad view of the issues involved.
The presidents have aimed high.
Last fall, Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, whose book Hot, Crowded and Flat: Why We Need a Green Revolution – and How It Can Renew America, has defined the issues for thousands of readers, was the keynote speaker.
