Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has until midnight Sunday, just six days from now, to act on hundreds of bills on his desk and either veto them, sign them or let them become law without his signature.
Normally at this point in the legislative session, a governor would be acting upon dozens of bills a day.
But not this year.
Schwarzenegger has signed a few high-profile pieces of legislation, like the Healthy Families measure earlier this week that prevented 600,000 youngsters from losing health insurance.
But on most days, there's been no action on these bills.
Why?
It's hard to know, but Assembly Speaker Karen Bass is alarmed. The governor has hinted that he would veto all the bills on his desk if the Legislature did not approve a package to address the state's water crisis by the end of the legislative year.
