Commentary: Oil tankers need two-tugboat towing in Alaska

The Anchorage Daily News

January 19, 2010 11:36 AM

If there was any question left about the need for two-tugboat escorts of tanker traffic in Prince William Sound, the headline on Page A-3 of Monday's Daily News should settle it.

"Escort tugs save disabled tanker."

Online, the head read:

"Escort tugs rescue drifting oil tanker."

Take your pick. We're still finding oil in Prince William Sound 20 years after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. That and the story of the stricken 832-foot tanker Kodiak towed to safety Sunday when it lost power underscore the need for unblinking vigilance and backup always at hand.
