Every American understands the importance of stopping nuclear terrorism before it starts. So President Barack Obama's call to eliminate or lock down nuclear materials within four years is timely and needed.
Gathering 47 countries together in Washington, D.C., last week to discuss the nuclear threat was an accomplishment in itself and strengthens the president's nuclear safety credentials.
"Because of the steps we've taken — as individual nations and as an international community — the American people will be safer and the world will be more secure," he said.
During the conference, several nations — Canada, Chile, Mexico, Russia and Ukraine, among others — agreed to reduce or get rid of their highly enriched uranium, the substance needed for nuclear weapons. Argentina and Pakistan said they would beef up port security to stop nuclear smuggling.
