Commentary: Aung San Suu Kyi's release is victory for Myanmar's people

The Miami Herald

November 17, 2010 10:30 AM

The release of Aung San Suu Kyi by Myanmar's military government last weekend was welcomed by her supporters and everyone around the world who cherishes freedom. Her radiant smile as she greeted joyous crowds outside her home held the promise of a brighter future for her beleaguered country.

Unfortunately, Myanmar's despotic generals aren't likely to leave her alone. After spending most of the last two decades in unjust captivity, Ms. Suu Kyi has become both a source of inspiration for her countrymen and the indomitable leader of a peaceful political resistance movement that refuses to die.

On Tuesday, the government warned against filing complaints over the widely discredited results of a recent election that the generals absurdly claim to have won by 80 percent. This was no doubt a warning to the 65-year-old Nobel Peace laureate, who wants her political party to be legally reinstated.

It is unclear what happens next, except that Ms. Suu Kyi won't give up. ``If you do nothing, you get nothing,'' she told supporters after her release. Do nothing is not her style.
