Commentary: On Facebook, never 'friend' a realtor and other advice for grads

Mark Washburn - The Charlotte Observer

May 12, 2011 12:52 PM

It is once again my pleasure to address the graduating class. Please listen carefully, as our menu options have changed.

First off, keep these goofy hats you're wearing. You never know when you'll be invited to a royal wedding.

Those of you sharing this on Twitter, the word is not spelled "b-o-a-r-i-n-g."

Know that your parents are very proud. Today is the day they have dreamed about for years. They've stacked all your possessions at the curb.

Some of you are about to join the workforce. Find a career you're passionate about. It's like making an extra $50,000 a year.

When your boss asks if you've got a minute, it's not going to take a minute.

Success brings the illusion of wisdom. Don't fall for it.

Some bosses are like a GPS. They don't know the best way, but there's no point in arguing. Shop for a better boss.

There's one glorious day when your boss instantly realizes how valuable you are to the company and says so. That's the very day you get an offer from a competitor.

You're fast approaching the age where you learn that - no matter what it says on the package - there's no such thing as fast relief.

Please - hang up and drive.

On Facebook, never "friend" a Realtor.
